Frequently Asked Questions

There are two types of questions across the six CPA Exam sections: multiple-choice questions and task-based simulations.

The CPA Exam scoring process is complex. When grading takes place, there are a number of “pretested” questions that are not weighed into your final score but are considered for use on future CPA Exams. These questions are not marked, so you will not know which are designated for pretest versus scored. Do not take any question you encounter on the exam for granted.

While some CPA Exam questions may be reused, the bigger point is that concepts are largely the same from year to year, barring AICPA blueprint updates. All UWorld CPA Review example questions reflect the latest blueprint updates, so you always learn the key concepts the AICPA expects candidates to know.

The AICPA includes what are called “pretest” questions on the exam that are not part of your score calculation. Pretest questions are included in each exam and question type and are used to gauge the general level of question quality. These questions are indistinguishable from graded questions but do not count towards your final score.

Each CPA Exam section varies:

  • AUD: 78 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and 7 Task-Based Simulations (TBSs)
  • FAR: 50 MCQs and 7 TBSs
  • REG: 72 MCQs and 8 TBSs
  • BAR: 50 MCQs and 7 TBSs
  • ISC: 82 MCQs and 6 TBSs
  • TCP: 68 MCQs and 7 TBSs

Understanding the structure of the CPA Exam helps you plan your time and test strategy effectively.

Task-Based Simulations are practical, scenario-based questions that require candidates to apply accounting knowledge to real-world situations. They may involve research tasks, filling out forms, analyzing data, or performing calculations.
Time management is critical. Plan to spend about 1.25–1.5 minutes per MCQ and about 15–20 minutes per Task-Based Simulation, leaving buffer time for review. UWorld practice exams simulate real testing conditions to help you develop your pacing.
No. As of the CPA Evolution update (2024), written communication tasks have been removed from the CPA Exam. The focus is now more on analysis, application, and evaluation via MCQs and TBSs.
Practicing with UWorld’s CPA questions allows you to get familiar with AICPA-style question formats, difficulty levels, and explanations. SmartPath™ technology also ensures that you focus on the right volume and difficulty of questions to match passing candidates’ study patterns.
