Procrastination. We all know what it is. It is an enemy for sure. I even looked it up online and as I typed in “Procrastination is the enemy of…”, I was given the options SUCCESS, TIME, and PROGRESS. All of these things are needed when you are trying to achieve a game-changing goal such as passing the CPA exam.
I have fallen victim to procrastination on many, many occasions.
I feel strongly that I would be much further along, if not completely done, with this exam if it was not for my tendency to procrastinate. It seems that when it comes time to study, I just so happen to find something that seems more interesting or important to do, even when it is not. We can all admit that the study content is not the most exciting at times and you really have to focus with great intent to remain engaged. However, I am determined this time around that this enemy will not defeat me. In spite of the many distractions that constantly compete for my attention, I have learned that the best thing I can do for myself is to create an environment that is conducive to my learning.
To alleviate the temptation to procrastinate, I have decided not to study at home.
I have to be completely honest with myself. I am not able to study where I know there is a bed, couch, or television nearby. For me, all three symbolize my need to relax. It gets me every time. Since my son is with my parents for the holidays, I have committed to going to the library after work every day, even on the weekends. It is quiet and there are not very many disturbances. Also, there is just something about being in the company of others that are studying. It reminds me of what I know I am supposed to be doing. It is like going to the gym. Once you are there, you might as well do the work.
My advice to those who may fall victim to procrastination
from time to time like I do is to put yourself in an environment that reminds you of what your goal is. Whether it is staying at work late, or locking yourself in your home office, or even going to the library like me, find a study spot where you can get in the zone, without interruption, and away from anything that jeopardizes your SUCCESS, TIME, and PROGRESS.
Good luck!!!
