Fall is officially here and in the accounting profession, this is prime recruitment season on college campuses nation-wide. Whether you’re a first-year undergraduate student or graduate student, NOW is the time to start getting involved.
In part 2 of our professional network series with Roger CPA Review’s Senior Business Development Director, Tom Rogowski, CPA, Tom discusses the importance of getting actively involved on campus to increase career opportunities.
Don’t Just Show Up
Tom’s recommendation is to go beyond simply attending recruiting events or club meetings. Those who are ACTIVE in student organizations, such as Beta Alpha Psi or Accounting Society, greatly increase their prospects for quality recruiting opportunities. For example, you could hold an officer position that schedules guest speakers for your club’s meetings or that helps put on your campus’ Meet the Firms event. An active role like this could put you in direct contact with recruiters who have their eye out for star candidates on your campus.
Go Where the Firms Are
Recruiters that are active on your campus are there because they want to make connections with students and build interest in their firm. In doing so, they host social events and deliver presentations, especially in the height of recruiting season. Be there. Go to these events and ENGAGE with the recruiters. They want to talk to you! Get to know them, because you may find that you have more in common with them than you thought and it could turn into an internship or job opportunity.
We know it’s easy to be apathetic about networking, and rely on your minimal appearance at events. But we want to make sure you’re not wasting time or opportunities, and that you’re setting yourself up for success. If you put yourself out there and engage in the process, you can truly stand out from the crowd.
