What You Need to Know About the July 2021 CPA Exam

what-you-need-to-know-about-the-july-2021-cpa-exam

The CPA Exam had minor changes in January of 2021, including content updates in Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) and Regulation (REG).  The changes, while important, are much less impactful than the CPA Exam changes starting July 1, 2021. Here is a list of the things you need to know about the July 2021 CPA Exam changes:

Changes to AUD and BEC

Most of the changes to the CPA exam fall into Auditing and Attestation (AUD) and Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) and were spawned by the need for CPA candidates to be more familiar with:

  • Understanding automated business processes and the related risks and controls,
  • The importance of having a digital and data-driven mindset as well as the use of data analytics, and
  • System and Organization Controls reports on internal controls over financial reporting at a service organization (i.e., SOC 1 reports).

In AUD, these items will be tested from an auditor’s perspective. In BEC, these items will be tested from management’s perspective.

CPA Candidates should also take note of some of the AUD and BEC topics to be expanded on the July 2021 exam:

AUD

  • Business processes and internal controls
    • Use of SOC 1 reports
  • IT system infrastructure
  • Data flows
  • Effect of general and application controls on the completeness and reliability of data
  • Use of automated tools and data analytics in the audit
  • Skepticism and judgment in analyzing data

BEC

  • Business processes and internal controls
    • Understanding the importance of SOC 1 reports for outsourced IT functions
    • Use of data and business intelligence
    • Data governance
    • Data management
    • Data relationships
    • Working with data (extraction, transformation, and loading)

Changes to FAR and REG

FAR and REG have had some reductions in content but have no additional content.
