Understanding Maine CPA Requirements

To become a CPA in Maine, you must pass the CPA Exam, meet education requirements, and possess the necessary work experience. Below is an outline of the CPA requirements in Maine:

Educational Requirements

To sit for the CPA Exam in Maine, candidates must complete a 4-year baccalaureate or higher degree with at least 120 semester hours (you may take the exam if you meet this requirement within 120 days following your examination date). Course requirements include:

  • At least 15 semester hours in accounting, auditing, and ethics, with 3 hours in auditing and attestation services.

To get your CPA license in Maine, you must complete 150 total semester hours of coursework.

Work Experience Requirements

Candidates must complete at least two years of qualifying work experience under the direction of a licensed CPA to obtain a license in the state. You must earn experience in a certified public accounting firm and include the use of accounting or auditing skills:

  • The issuance of reports on financial statements
  • The provision of management advisory
  • Financial advisory or consulting services
  • The preparation of tax returns
  • The furnishing of advice on tax matters
  • Equivalent activities defined by the Board

Maine CPA Exam & Licensing - Cost and Fees

As per NASBA, candidates must pay an education evaluation fee and the particular exam section fees. The education evaluation fee for the CPA Exam is $90, while the fee for each section is $344.80.

The initial CPA license fee. is $35. Candidates must also pay $21 for a criminal background check, raising the total license fee to $56.

License Renewal Requirements

All CPAs in Maine must renew their license annually on or before September 30. The annual renewal fee is $35, with a late fee of $50 issued to those who miss the deadline. If you submit your renewal application more than 90 days after your license expiration date, you must meet all applicable requirements for new applicants.

Continuing Education Requirements

  1. You must have completed 40 hours of approved Continuing Professional Education (CPE) at the time of renewal.
  2. Four hours of CPE in professional ethics every three years.
  3. Candidates can carry forward up to 20 CPE hours on the condition that it's utilized immediately in the succeeding licensure period.
  4. Soft courses worth 50% (20 hours) of the total CPE hours that include:
    • Communication Arts
    • Human Resources Policies
    • Mathematics, Statistics
    • Economics
    • Business, Securities and Administrative Law
    • Probability and Quantitative Applications in Business

Candidates can sit for the CPA Exam based on their preference as per the CPA Exam and score release dates. It’s important to note that AICPA has temporarily paused the continuous testing for the CPA Exam to account for standard-setting analyses and activities.

Important Update: With the launch of the new CPA Exam in January 2024, some candidates with conditional credit may be impacted by limited opportunities to test and delays in score reporting. Accordingly, any candidate with CPA Exam credit(s) on January 1, 2024, will have such credit(s) extended to June 30, 2025—source: CPA Examination Credit Extension Policy.
