Understanding Wyoming CPA Requirements

The Wyoming Board of Certified Public Accountants lays down the CPA requirements for the state. It is closely associated with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA®). Becoming a CPA in Wyoming requires candidates to complete their education, pass the CPA and ethics exams, and gain work experience, among other requirements.

Educational Requirements

As per Wyoming CPA requirements, candidates must have at least 120 semester hours of college education to sit for the CPA Exam. Of the 120 semester hours, 24 semester hours each should be obtained in accounting and business courses (non-accounting) at the undergraduate or graduate level. Note that a maximum of 6 semester hours for the internship may count towards the accounting or business course requirement.

For CPA licensure, candidates must obtain 150 semester hours of college education, including 24 semester hours each in accounting and business courses (excluding non-accounting courses).

Work Experience Requirements

Obtaining hands-on experience before licensure is mandatory for Wyoming CPA candidates. Hence, candidates must demonstrate at least 1 year of experience in public accounting, verified by an active CPA. The experience shall be gained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public accounting.

However, the board may consider equivalent experience that is not verified by an active CPA. In this case, the candidates must provide documentation verifying equivalency by specifying the job title, employment period, and a detailed description of their roles and responsibilities, affirmed by an appropriate supervisor or official. Moreover, the candidate shall provide work samples demonstrating the quality of work experience earned.

Ethical Exam Requirements

Wyoming does not require CPA candidates to pass a separate ethics examination as part of the licensure process. Instead, licensed CPAs in Wyoming must complete Board-approved ethics continuing professional education. According to the Wyoming Board of Certified Public Accountants, license holders are required to complete 4 hours of regulatory and professional ethics CPE every 3 years through a Board-approved provider.
