About the REG CPA Exam | [Updated for 2026]

The Regulation (REG) section of the CPA Exam assesses a candidate’s knowledge and skills in U.S. federal taxation, U.S. ethics and professional responsibilities related to tax practice, and U.S. business law.

What Is the REG Exam Format and Structure?

The Regulation (REG) section of the CPA Exam spans 4 hours and consists of 5 testlets. Following the completion of the 3rd testlet, candidates have the option for a 15-minute break, which does not count toward the 4-hour test duration.

2026 REG CPA Exam Structure
Total Time 4 Hours
Multiple Choice Questions 72
Task-Based Simulations 8

Pre Exam

At the beginning of your REG CPA Exam, you will encounter 2 sets of welcome screens. The first set verifies your personal details, including name, ID, exam portion, and launch code. Following this, you must accept the confidentiality declarations. Each screen allows a maximum of 5 minutes for completion.

Exam

Pretest questions are not scored, but operational questions are. The REG exam is composed of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and task-based simulations (TBS). Each testlet contains questions from only 1 of the following question types.

  • Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs): The first 2 testlets on the REG exam consist of MCQs, with 36 questions per testlet. With a total of 72 MCQs, 60 are operational, meaning they contribute to the exam score, whereas the remaining 12 are pretested and do not contribute to the exam score.
  • Task-Based Simulations (TBS): The remaining 3 testlets consist of TBS questions. There are 8 TBS in total: 7 are operational, and 1 is pretested.

Post Exam

Following the exam, you will be asked to complete a 5-minute survey regarding your exam experience.

How is the REG CPA Exam Scored?

Scores for the REG exam are given on a scale of 0 to 99. Candidates must score 75 or higher to pass. These aren’t percentages, and they shouldn’t be treated as such. Scaled scores on the exam’s MCQs and TBS are determined using algorithms that take into account whether the question was successfully answered, as well as the difficulty level of each question.

For example, a candidate who answers 10 difficult questions correctly will receive a higher score than a candidate who answers 10 easy (lower value) questions correctly. Therefore, answering 75% of the questions on the exam correctly does not translate into a score of 75. Many factors contribute to a CPA Exam Score. Learn more about how the CPA Exam is scored here.

The 1st half of a candidate’s REG exam score is made up of MCQs, while the 2nd half is made up of TBSs. The weight of a candidate’s final score will be evenly allocated between MCQs and TBS. This means that the weightage for MCQs and TBS is 50% each.

Credit for the REG exam MCQs is weighted by difficulty level; candidates who answer more difficult questions correctly receive more credit than those who answer less difficult questions correctly. While an MCQ can be answered correctly or incorrectly, non-research-based TBS receive partial credit. Research-based TBS are assessed as correct or incorrect, with no partial credit provided.
